How does Community Solar work?
As energy costs continue to climb across the country, affordability matters more than ever. Community Solar can help. Community Solar is a state-supported cost savings program that allows eligible businesses and households to save money on their electricity bills and support more clean energy in their local communities — without installing equipment or adding panels to their roof.
Altus Power's clean energy is produced by large-scale "solar farms" owned and operated by Altus Power, located on nearby commercial rooftops, carports, or on the ground. Solar farms are made up of hundreds or even thousands of solar panels, which capture energy from the sun and convert it into electricity we use every day.
We send the power produced by these solar farms directly to local electricity grids so it can be used to power homes and businesses in the surrounding community, saving people money and reducing the reliance on energy derived from fossil fuels.
Community Solar projects have multiple subscribers, each receiving their own "share" of the project's total energy output — sized to match their historic energy usage. To subscribe, customers must be served by the same utility the project is connected to.
Utility companies track the solar energy we send to the grid as "solar credits," which are distributed monthly to subscribed customers on their electricity bills. Altus Power subscribers receive solar credits each month that offset their utility bill, then pay us for those credits at a 5–20% discount — so they're paying less for the electricity they already use.
Our subscribed customers will continue to see savings on their utility bill for the lifetime of the project, or until cancellation. To join, visit join.altuspower.com.
